The Meaning Behind Our Crest: Understanding Sigma Kappa Psi's Coat of Arms

When you think about sororities, one of the first symbols that often comes to mind is the coat of arms, or crest. It’s more than just an emblem – it’s a visual representation of our history, values, and the bonds we share. For Sigma Kappa Psi Sorority, our coat of arms tells the story of who we are, where we come from, and the powerful vision we hold as women in the aviation industry.

So, what exactly does each part of Sigma Kappa Psi’s coat of arms symbolize? Let’s break it down:

The Woman: At the heart of our crest is the woman, representing strength, independence, and the courage to forge our own paths. She stands tall as a symbol of all the women who have paved the way in aviation, and those who continue to inspire us today. Her presence reminds us that as flight attendants, we are not just workers – we are powerful, capable women with the strength to soar.

The Angel and Sword: The angel holding a sword embodies protection and guidance. She represents the guardian spirit of our sisterhood, always looking out for one another. The sword symbolizes the strength to cut through life’s challenges and obstacles, and the determination to protect ourselves and our sisters as we navigate the highs and lows of the aviation industry. Together, the angel and sword reflect our shared commitment to stand strong, protect each other, and lift one another up.

The Five Airplanes: Each of the five airplanes represents one of our sorority’s founders—Sherry E. Livingston, Donna Nixon, Sunni Lynn Simmons, Jael Moses, and Debra A. Johnson. These incredible women laid the foundation for Sigma Kappa Psi, and the airplanes serve as a reminder of the journey we’ve taken and the destinations we’ve yet to explore. Their legacy guides us as we continue to grow, welcoming new sisters into our fold and keeping their spirit alive in all we do.

The Year of Establishment: The year 2024 is proudly displayed on our coat of arms, marking the official founding of Sigma Kappa Psi. This is the year we began our journey together, united by our passion for aviation and our desire to create a supportive community for flight attendants. It serves as a constant reminder of how far we’ve come, and the amazing future we have ahead of us.

Our coat of arms is a powerful symbol of sisterhood, unity, and the values we hold dear. Each part has been thoughtfully designed to tell our unique story and to serve as a constant reminder of the strength and support we find within Sigma Kappa Psi. As we continue to grow and welcome new sisters into our sorority, we carry these symbols with us, knowing that we are part of something greater than ourselves.

With every glance at our crest, we are reminded of the incredible women who came before us, the strength we share today, and the bright future ahead. It’s a beautiful reflection of who we are as Sigma Angels.
